SIMPLE IRA or SIMPLE Roth IRA: Which One Fits You?

Hyde offers both the SIMPLE IRA and the SIMPLE Roth IRA. Both help you save money for retirement. The big difference is when you pay taxes.

SIMPLE IRA: Pay taxes later

  • Money going in: Your money goes into the account before taxes come out. This lowers the income you pay taxes on this year.

  • While it grows: You do not pay taxes on your money as it grows.

  • Money coming out: You pay taxes when you take the money out in retirement.

  • A good fit if: You think your tax rate will be lower after you retire.

SIMPLE Roth IRA: Pay taxes now

  • Money going in: Your money goes into the account after taxes come out. You do not get a tax break this year.

  • While it grows: Your money grows tax-free.

  • Money coming out: You pay no taxes when you take the money out in retirement, as long as you follow the plan rules.

  • A good fit if: You think your tax rate will be higher after you retire.

Good to know

  • You can save more. SIMPLE plans let you put in more money each year than a regular IRA or Roth IRA.

  • Your employer can add money too. Employers can put money into your SIMPLE account on top of what you save.

  • Taking money out early can cost you. With both plans, you may pay a penalty if you take money out before age 59 and a half. The penalty can be higher in your first two years in the plan.

  • Roth accounts give you more room. With a Roth, you can take out the money you put in at any time without paying taxes on it.

How to choose

Ask yourself one question: Do I want my tax break now or later?

  • Pick the SIMPLE IRA if you want to pay less in taxes today.

  • Pick the SIMPLE Roth IRA if you want tax-free money when you retire.

SIMPLE Roth IRA: Pague impuestos ahora
